I get to learn a lot about him in these two hours. Thereâs nowhere to be, and as the scenery changes itâs rife for idle chit-chat.
âDo you still do the live action role-play?â I say, trying to steer us onto less flirtatious ground. I remember his LARPing from the photo weâd seen of him before we met. âYou used to do it loads in Liverpool, didnât you?â
He considers the question. âYou know â¦â he said. âThis is the longest Iâve gone without LARPing since I was a teenager. I love it, but I suppose Iâve just been doing other things.â
âPlaying tourist?â
âIs that a guess, or a cyber-stalk again?â
âNo comment.â
âIâve looked at your page sometimes too. And I follow the Find JPâs Girl account.â
My heart soared when he first followed the account. Iâm touched that heâd take an interest.
âIâd imagine film-making taps into the same feeling I get from LARPing, now that I think about it.â
âHow so?â
âYou know, getting to try on another character for size, using a story to learn about yourself â¦â
âIâd never even heard of it before. It does seem pretty cool. Thereâs something about finding an interest or a passion and really going for it, isnât there? The difference between, I donât know, going to a football match once in a while and plastering your bedroom in team colours, researching the formations, following the transfers or whatever.â
âListen to you, itâs like tuning in to Match of the Day!â
âShut up,â I say. âWe canât all be Alan Shearer.â
âTo be fair,â he replies, âI played a bit of footie before I moved, but it wasnât exactly a passion. It was just what everyone else did and it kept me busy. Iâd prefer to lift weights or listen to a podcast on a treadmill to keep fit.â
âWhich you obviously do.â I grin.
âI try to keep in shape, yes,â he says, flexing an arm like Johnny Bravo.
It killed me, having to walk away from him last night. He keeps looking at me now, and he thinks heâs being stealthy and that I havenât noticed, but I have. I mean, I look awful. I feel like Iâve not slept in a decade and Iâm really mad at myself for not taking off my make-up last night, and for not washing my face this morning. Candice was gone when I woke up, and so I hit snooze more times than I should have, leaping out of bed at the last moment. I didnât expect to run into anyone, but of course the laws of the universe dictate that whenever you look like youâve been dug up from a grave you have to bump into everyone you know. I donât normally have trouble getting up, but I felt heavy and sluggish today. I guess Iâm a bit sad, really. Candice and I have fallen out before â weâve had silly disagreements and big screaming fights, but they didnât feel like this. The energy to this one is different. Itâs more ⦠sinister.
